Weekend for Willy

Bill Engel (Willy James) was an integral part of our music community. He was an awesome and selfless husband, father, musician, organiser and enabler.

Willy performed on many stages and co-hosted the Sunday Soul Service and open stage every Sunday afternoon at the Newcastle Pub. His strong vocal range and song writing abiliies was enjoyed by so many. Bill and his wife Sheila spearheaded and supported countless charity events in Edmonton.

Willy was diagnosed with cancer and it became our community's turn to give Bill and Sheila a helping hand. There was a two day event fundraiser at the Newcastle Pub Dec 2 & Dec. 3, 2017.

Willy passed away January 29, 2018 and his warm, calm fellowship will be greatly missed.

Paula Perro

Paula Perro’s smooth yet unrestrained vocals are threaded with dulcet tones – a smoky sultriness rarely heard these days. She’s a sassy belter with a refreshingly genuine and captivating musical sensibility, and delivers a show with abundant heart and soul every time she hits the stage. Her energy is infectious.

Growing up in St. John’s, Paula built her musical foundation on Celtic, Country and Newfoundland Folk, but she was also heavily influenced by her older siblings who loved all the infamous classic rock bands from the 60’s and 70’s. Her mother was a singer with a voice like Patsy Cline, which Paula found very soothing. One of her fondest memories is having her mom sing her to sleep, a tradition she continues with her own kids today.

The pivotal moment that shaped Paula’s musical path came when she was 18 and first heard the moving and unmistakable voice of Nina Simone. The song was I Want A Little Sugar in My Bowl, and Simone’s voice haunted Paula. She immersed herself in Simone’s music and eventually discovered a plethora of musicians that, like Simone, sang with conviction and authenticity. These artists encouraged Paula to pay critical attention to the “twelve bars” that eventually changed her life. It was the beautiful beginning of Paula’s exploration of Blues, and so much more …

Paula has shared the stage with some local legends like Big Hank Lionheart and Harpdog Brown. For the last few years, she’s been seen around E-Town with the fabulous rock-n-blues band No Foolin’. Recently, she’s been working with The Project, a group of seasoned musicians delving into funky R&B and Electric Blues – a big band with a big sound! Alongside gutsy arrangements of esteemed covers that lend a refreshing take on tunes people have come to know and love, Paula also mixes classic R&B, Blues, as well as her own multi-flavored originals for a toe-tappin’, booty-shakin’ kind of show that delivers “food for your soul”! She’s just finished her first solo EP, Make It Look Easy, and is actively working on her full-length debut album. She couldn’t be more excited!

Darrell Barr

As the stage lights go down and Darrell Barr takes the spotlight, it's a guarantee he'll bring the house down. This seasoned veteran of studio and stage works an audience like he does a guitar: with outstanding skill. His stellar vocals, range of genres, and original song writing, tell you stories and get your feet tapping.

He has recently released his Original CD, "Here I Am", featuring " Moving to Mexico" now available on iTunes.

Son of a long hauler, the Alberta born artist grew up the second oldest of 4 children. Music has been Darrell's driving force from the moment his father gave him a drum set as a child, and soon after placed a 6 string in his hands.

After winning the Bud Country Cross Canada Talent Contest, Darrell appeared on TNN's "Nashville Now". During his 2 years in Nashville, Darrell played to sold out crowds along Music City's famous Printer's Alley

Darrell has shared the stage with several top artists including; Foreigner, Herman's Hermits, Yes, Badfinger, Dr. Hook, Chilliwack, and The Little River Band. Darrell opened for the Craven Big Valley Jamboree with headliners such as Garth Brooks, Charlie Pride, Travis Tritt, and Patty Loveless.

Darrell also performed on a televised Christmas show with 'Female Country Vocalist of the Year' Michele Wright.

His current goals are to complete his next album of originals, including collaborations with other artists, as well as expand his touring throughout Canada and the United States.

Music is not something Darrell does – it's who he is.

Tim Isberg

Singer-Songwriter-Soldier with well crafted songs, great stage presence and unique life experiences he shares to make each listener feel connected. Originally from southern Alberta, Tim is an accomplished singer-songwriter who is emerging in the performance scene after a lengthy hiatus from music to serve in the Canadian Army.

From Rwanda to Afghanistan, Tim had the privilege and real-life challenges over several years living and working in different cultures, international conflict zones and amid the best and worst humanity has to offer. As a performer, he entertained audiences in many corners of Europe, Africa, Afghanistan and throughout the Middle East and Levant. Many of his storyteller songs stem from these life adventures.

Tim brings well crafted songs to the stage along with an appealing vocal timbre, but more than that, he brings a unique and endearing array of life experiences and shares them in a way that makes each listener feel connected.

In his years abroad, Tim was a favourite on folk club circuits and in group performances internationally for deployed military and civilian personnel performing his own Roots and Alt-Country original songs and an eclectic mix of rock, pop, folk, celtic and country cover tunes.

Tim's solid guitar rhythms and ear-catching songs create a style of his own where listeners can escape into the story behind the song. His demo song "Devil on Your Back" of revenge on outlaws on the western Blackfoot Plains was a finalist in the Best Song of Alberta for the Calgary Folk Music Festival.

Tim released a full length album 'Tears Along The Road' in October 2015 recorded with celebrated producer-engineer Miles Wilkinson; along with other JUNO and award winning musicians, which was selected by Music Canada in the Top 25 Albums (all genres) of 2015! The title track, released to radio in fall 2015, is on rotation with several stations across Canada, with the album also being played on popular FM and internet shows across the US, UK and elsewhere.

Tim also has an academic background in environmental sciences and international studies, and skills in training horses. His added experience as a public speaker and as a master of ceremonies for special events, all contribute to a positive audience experience.  www.timisberg.com
